Reporting to the CSI Biomechanics and Performance Analysis Lead as well as Canada Soccer Head of Physical Performance, the Performance Analyst will be primarily responsible for assisting with the operations of the Performance Analysis discipline for Soccer Canada, including ensure that the Women’s Excel (WEP) and Men’s Excel Program (MEP)  receive best practices to monitor players physical performance into their operations and programs, maximizing the chances of winning medals at the Olympics and World Championships and producing players for the national team programs. The EXCEL Performance Analyst will be in charge of developing and maintaining all systems related to the monitoring of physical performance data and creating a sustainable system that can be used across all teams of the EXCEL program (WEP & MEP).

Specifically, the EXCEL Performance Analyst is responsible for establishing and advising on physical monitoring (testing, wellness, training loads) as physical match performance analysis (GPS & HR), creating a visualization of the data can be readily available to all relevant staff from the EXCEL program. In addition, the EXCEL Performance Analyst is in charge of managing the medical database (Smartabase) and constructing a sustainable system to manage all the player's medical and physical performance information. The incumbent works closely with coaches, athletes, sport science and sports medicine practitioners to ensure a safe, effective and holistic approach to performance development and enhancement.

Further, as a part of duties related to the provision of Data Solutions services, this role will report to the Data Solutions lead and be primarily responsible for assisting in the continued development of the CSIP sports data and athlete management database. This will include liaising with other members of the CSIP performance services team on their data needs, developing data visualizations and dashboards, and providing builder services within the Smartabase athlete management platform.

KEY DELIVERABLES & SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES:

BIO-MECHANICS AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS SOCCER 0.45 (FTE)

1         DELIVER A WORLD CLASS TRAINING LOAD MONITORING SYSTEM

  • Centralized all information related to physical monitoring (Smartabase)
  • Create an online remote monitoring system (wellness) and associated visualization and reporting of the data
  • Create a training load management system aligned with wellness monitoring in camp (GPS, HR, RPE) and visualization
  • Support all other monitoring tool system necessary in camp or remotely (e.g. hydration status, submaximal testing, sweat analysis, etc.)
  • Implement research and innovation in the area of player monitoring
  • Provide all professional clubs with comprehensive loading report post-camp
  • Work closely with professional clubs to gather key training load information prior to camp.
  • Basic statistical analysis and reporting
  • Working on special innovation and research projects as directed by Canada Soccer Head of Physical Performance or CSIP Biomechanics/Performance Analysis lead.

2         DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE TRACKING SYSTEM

  • Collate, analyze and visualize physical match performance data for all programs, setting individual standards, positional norms, and team objectives
  • Design in-depth match data analysis to inform training session design (e.g. worst-case scenario training)
  • Collate, analyze and visualize all testing data from all programs, setting physical testing gold medal standards and track individual progress.
  • Collate weight room standard across the WEP to define standards across the programs and set targets for players to reach and strive towards

3         CREATE A MEDICAL AND MENTAL TRACKING SYSTEM AND COLLABORATE WITH TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE ANALYST

  • Manage the Medical Smartabase system, working closely with the Head of Physical Performance and Canada Soccer medical staff. This may include but not limited to: Upload physical data, create new medical forms and manage team rosters within the system
  • Create an effective injury tracking process and dashboard
  • Enhance current mental tracking system
  • Provide a wellness compliance report every two weeks
  • Collaborate on a key project with technical performance analysis in the area of data management and statistical analysis.

BIO-MECHANICS AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS PSO WINTER SPORTS 0.4 (FTE)

1         DELIVER TRAINING LOAD MONITORING SYSTEM

  • Create an online remote monitoring system (wellness) and associated visualization and reporting of the data
  • Support all other monitoring tool system necessary in camp or remotely (e.g. hydration status, submaximal testing, sweat analysis, etc.)
  • Basic statistical analysis and reporting

2         DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE PERFORMANCE TRACKING/REPORTING SYSTEM

  • Collate, analyze and visualize all testing data with IMU/GPS from PSO winter sports, setting physical testing standards and track individual progress.

 DATA SOLUTIONS SPECIALIST (0.15 FTE)

1          SMARTABASE BUILDING AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Develop competency with Smartabase builder and administration tools through online video, documentation and in-house training
  • Liaising with Data Solutions head-on Smartabase form design and organization to ensure compliance with best practice compliance
  • Investigating novel data streams and collection systems toward integrating these into the CSI / Smartabase environment
  • Work with Data Solutions staff to develop Smartabase API based data pipelines

GENERAL

            ADMINISTRATION

  • Provide written reports on the Performance Analysis program to sports staff as requested;
  • Ensure that the sport maintains pace with other nations and other sports in regard to Performance analysis techniques and technology
  • Undertake periodic reviews of the Analysis program with the traveling analysis staff and tour management staff and submit review reports to sports staff;
  • Provide general IT support to other sports staff, including performing any necessary maintenance tasks and producing any audio-visual material as required;
  • Serve as an advisor to sports staff on Performance Analysis matters.

EXPERIENCE & ATTRIBUTES:

        • 5+ years’ experience as a sport scientist, working as part of an IST in a high performance, inter-disciplinary sport environment
        • Experience with physical performance data (GPS, HR, etc.)
        • Advanced computer programming languages (R/R-Shiny, Python, JavaScript) experience
        • Highly skilled in Microsoft Excel and other data management systems (e.g. PowerBI..)
        • Experience with the sport of Soccer.
        • Successful completion of a Criminal Records Check and verification of relevant education/certifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

NECESSARY:

  • Advanced knowledge in computer programming langauge R, R-Shiny, Python, JavaScript or other similar languages. 

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics or a related discipline
  • 3+ years’ experience as a sport scientist, working as part of an IST in a high performance, inter-disciplinary sport environment
  • Experience with physical performance data (GPS, HR, etc.)
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Excel and other data management systems (e.g. PowerBI..)
  • Experience with the sport of Soccer.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Records Check and verification of relevant education/certifications

 

DESIRABLE:

  • Experience with basic testing equipment (e.g. timing lights, contact mat, etc.)
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology
  • Background in a high-performance sports coach and/or athlete
  • Experience with video analysis, understanding of statistical procedures, and/or familiarity with sports performance laboratory.

SALARY: Starting at $45,000 - 55,000/year plus a full competitive benefits package (extended health and dental coverage plus life, accidental death and dismemberment, critical illness, and long-term disability income insurance.)

WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a full time (37.5 hours/week) position with a 1-year term, with potential to extend. The position will be providing service to Soccer Canada and Canadian Sport Institute Pacific at either of our offices based in Vancouver or Whistler and may require travel to training camps and competitions.
